I hear you. We’re watching genocide and the magnitude of the conflict’s impact on countless innocent families. We feel the pain of being unable to help.
With recurring media images and worsening news daily, there’s no respite from the intensity. Our response risks turning into ‘empathic distress’, where our own distress becomes an additional load, on top of the terrible external situation. It affects our mental health and our relationships. Let’s not allow the aggressors to have that win too! |
The standard mindfulness solutions suggest breathing and meditation … hmm, maybe.
But how do we switch off from the conflict? And do we want to? Savouring practice has a distinct role here.

The tedious bits, the annoying bits. Too much noise. Too little sleep. Deadlines. Traffic. Social media. Two sad drops left in the milk carton when you finally get to the fridge. Too little just-me time (aka, rebuild time). Too little just-BE time (ahhhh ..). |
--> If you leave it up to you, it probably won't happen. Habit is strong-strong-strong, hard to break. --> What's more, the built in autopilot function of the human brain works against you. |
Kinda in a trance. Not actually there. Here.
Where, then? Not-here, lost! Let's switch on the light and stop to notice the small, good moments life delivers on a regular basis. In savouring practice, we make a point to linger with the good moments, let them land. Be felt. Integrated. |
--> Committing to a course of action gets the ball rolling.
--> Working in a group means we hold each other accountable, share triumphs and setbacks. --> Swoop in for the Early Bird ($159 for six weekly meetings 6pm on Zoom on a Wednesday) |

“Taking in the good is not about putting a happy shiny face on everything, nor is it about turning away from the hard things in life. It's about nourishing well-being, contentment, and peace inside that are refuges you can always come from and return to.” ― Rick Hanson, Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom |
